Cons of Movie and TV shows Ratings?

Why is the downside of a tv show or movie being rated? I already know many movies face commercial death due to ratings. What are cons of tv shows and moves being rated?

Sometimes a show will worry about what it's rating is more than making a good show. Some ratings like MA can't be shown in certain timeslots. This means that the makers of the show either have to self-censor or their rating may change--causing them all sorts of problems, not the least of which is that it was a show that was OK for kids last week and this episode isn't. Look at all the complaints the Simpsons halloween specials received, despite the special warnings at the beginning.

How badly censorship affects TV is tough to decide. Some shows move to cable or late night where they can say whatever they want. But if you want a prime time, network show, there are limits to what you can get away with. The shows don't end up being exactly what the artists had in mind or could have come up with when they were making it. But Shakespeare made good plays while always having to worry about his censors and sponsors--it may not be a bad thing, unless it goes too far.

Its to keep the youngsters away from stuff they don't need to see.
Somewhat off subject, but kinda related-

I bought event viewing tickets for the first Pirates Of The Caribbean. The reviewers bagged it. I ended up waiting for it on video and think it's one of the best pics I've ever seen.

Think ratings are along the same lines- good question, sorry I'm not really "on" subject.
